WordPress when publishing is the product
If the team will add pages, events, a blog, a shop via WooCommerce, and they already live in that admin, WordPress is often kinder. The cost is care: updates, plugins, a host that is not a mystery.
It is not ‘old’. It is a CMS with a large ecosystem and a real maintenance burden. Anyone who installs thirty plugins and disappears is the problem, not the software.
Next.js when the site is a product
Marketing sites that should be fast, previewed, and composed; software UIs; stacks with TypeScript and an API. Next.js is our default for that work because it is calm to ship and calm to keep — on Vercel or similar.
Editors still need a way to change copy. That might be a headless CMS, MDX, or us publishing for you. ‘Next.js’ is not a sentence that means ‘you cannot edit’.
Ecommerce is a third question
Shopify if you want less server care. WooCommerce if you already live in WordPress. A custom storefront if the catalogue rules are the product. We will not pretend they are the same.
